I learned today that a friend's dad had passed away. I started to write her a text, and stopped myself, feeling that was not the way to express my condolences. I needed to send a card. She didn't need to randomly check her phone, say during a grocery run, and get my message. She needed to be in the warmth of her home, so her grief could pour out if necessary.

My feeling about tradition is this:

It is the easiest to rationalize away and convince yourself it is not necessary

BUT

It is the most important 'glue' a family has and that is why it shouldn't be rationalized away.
