Me, Rutgers, and the Revolutionary War

Every time Craig and I go to the US, we want to travel to some place outside of Detroit. I've been to A LOT of places around the US but Craig has been to...um...Detroit, South Haven, and Holland ... which are all in Michigan. We have a few trips planned for this coming year - New York and Florida to be exact - but I kind of wanted to try out Central New Jersey.

Now that you've stopped laughing, I have a reason for wanting to see central NJ! When I was 17 and looking into universities, I kinda wanted to go to Rutgers.

Ok, now REALLY stop laughing. I know, I know, there was NO WAY I was getting into Rutgers with my grades but now that I'm older, I kinda want to see what I missed out on.

I have another reason as to why Central Jersey seems fun: I'm a history buff!! Up until recently, I had no idea Jersey had such a rich colonial history. Plus, they have a cool Vietnam-era educational center in Holmdel that I would really like to check out. When I was in high school, I took an independent study on the Vietnam War (think of it as a really intense course that I took independently with very little supervision from my teacher). I ran through all of the other history classes and nothing else seemed interesting, so I asked to create my own subject. I wrote a 110 page overview of the war - battles and all - so heading to Holmdel to the educational center would be really fun for me and I could explain the war to Craig a bit more.

There's other historical stuff there, too, but I think I'd focus on the revolutionary war. Maybe I'll leave Craig and home and just go with my Dad on an extension of our Civil War trip.

Anyway, there's something about Central Jersey that just makes me want to visit. Plus, I think we have family there. It's a win-win.

Have you ever thought of visiting Central Jersey? Check out this Facebook page for more details: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Go-Central-Jersey/192539467528987 or visit GoCentralJersey.com!

Historical Acting Dreams

Once upon a time I wanted to be an actress. My parents thought it was the dumbest idea and didn't exactly support me on it. Look, it wasn't as if I wanted to be an astronaut or a physicist. We ALL know I'm not cut out to be either of those but I think I would have been an award winning actress. Alas, without an audition coach, no one would have taken me seriously, right? Maybe I just needed to be pushed in the right direction... who knows.
Picture it: me + Rob Lowe in the greatest film ever made!!

Fast forward some years later and here I am ... not an actress. I could have gone to the Actor's Studio and had some audition coaching but my real dream doesn't lie in making people laugh or cry ... I do that for free. My dream lies in history, fact finding, and learning about a time that is fleeting quickly from our memories. Still, I wonder what would have happened if I followed through with all of my determination, ambition, and passion. Would I have become an actress? Would I be on TV or in the movies? I guess no one can answer that but I think it's safe to say that where I ended up isn't so bad! I have a great husband, one heck of a kid, two sweet dogs, a caring and loving family, and a fantastic life.

Above: people who need audition coaches. Reality TV is the WORST form of acting.

My dreams are coming true - slowly, slowly (which, I'll admit, sounds WAY better in Hebrew) - but I'm only 31. If I wanted to act, I think I could do it! I think I'd still be a kick ass actress (with the right coaching and training) but I'll stick to writing and researching history.

Give me a JOB History Channel!!!

Zookt - Win BIG and Win DEALS

I'm not much of a gamer - unless you count my nightly game of backgammon - but I'm relatively intrigued by Zookt. There's something REALLY fun about playing games and shopping ... so Zookt combined the two! It's a win-win for me because I like mindless activity (like games) and I really like shopping!

Here's the dish:
Zookt allows people to play games and win deals. Their featured deals are pretty spectacular  (Helloooo Kindle Fire, come to mama!) and the concept is pretty simple. Play games, win games, win deals. Zookt is different from most deal sites because you can pick and choose which deal you want - then you compete against other people who want the same deal. You're playing against them in live deals in order to win their deal. Sound cool?

The video below explains the concept and the company a bit more...

If you want to see it in a bigger screen, watch it on YouTube here: http://youtu.be/8TDGGgypyTI

I am SUPER excited because I like a good deal and sometimes I just need to switch my brain off. All you need to do to get started is register, pick out your product, choose a game, check out, then WIN! Sounds fun, right?? I can't wait to win my first prize!

Gratitude Challenge - One Year Later

Just before moving to Israel, 2006
When I was in kindergarten, I performed in a play. Both of my parents had to work and the only person that showed up was my Bubba. This 4ft. 9in. little lady exuded so much pride watching her five year old granddaughter perform some play for the rest of her class. I remember being the only person there with no parent present and yet I was the luckiest girl in the world because my Bubba came to watch me. I also remember going home with her and eating chicken soup. It was the highlight of my day.

I would go visit my grandparents every year in their winter condo in Florida. I'd goof off with my Zeidy but I'd cry when it was time to leave my Bubba. I was a sensitive kid (putting it mildly) and the thought of not seeing her until April made me sad.
Wedding Day, 1945

She came to our concerts, recitals, and award ceremonies. She was there when I gave my first Holocaust lecture. She watched my wedding on my uncle's computer and cried watching me say my vows. She fed me. Clothed me. Told me I was the greatest sleeper as a child. She taught me to cook and to bake. She taught me how to run a household with an iron fist, even if you look like the sweetest woman in the world.

My Bubba wasn't charismatic. She wasn't posh or terribly involved in her looks. She wasn't a quiet woman who just stood by her husband's side.

She was a force to be reckoned with. She felt pride in how she looked. She worked along side her husband building a life, a business, and a home.

All the great-grand kids
Last year, I received a phone call from my Dad telling me she had a stroke. His voice told me to stay where I was but his tone told me to come home. I caught the longest flight of my life and traveled for what felt like forever just to get home. I was three months pregnant. I was supposed to fly home a week later and we were going to tell everyone about the baby. She threw a wrench in my plans.

I got to spend a few days with my grandmother before her passing. I slept at hospice during Shabbat so she wouldn't be alone. My sister slept there motzi-Shabbat to ensure the same thing. She stuck around long enough for every grandchild to say goodbye and she passed away peacefully on July 12, 2011. That day changed my life forever.
Happy Anniversary

I gave the eulogy at her funeral and I have no idea how I did it. I found new hiding places in my parents' house during shiva so I didn't have to talk about my pregnancy, or my flight, or living in Israel. I only wanted to talk about my Bubba. I took comfort with my siblings and my cousins and then it was over. Life moved on.

I miss her on every holiday. I miss her every time I go to visit family for dinner. I miss her every time I look at photos. I miss her every time I see my son smile. I miss her every day.

My Dad's Bar Mitzvah
It's been one year since she passed away in the Gregorian calendar. There's not a day that goes by where I don't think about her and wish I could call to ask for advice. Sometimes I just want to hear her voice - but I hear it in my head.

My grandmother lived a full life - even though a good 25% of it was living in hell. She was a survivor of the Holocaust and came out of the ashes to be a true warrior woman. While she didn't teach me grace, she did teach me compassion. She taught me to go after what I want. She taught me to be true to myself. She taught me that family matters.

Today, I am grateful for my grandmother - Lola Rubin (Leicha Teichman Rubin - לאה טייכמן רובין). May she live on in memory.

Gratitude Challenge - Feeling Icky

Hi Fans! Sorry I've been so elusive lately! I'm battling one hell of a flu virus! Saturday, just before lunching with a friend in Jerusalem, I started feeling queasy. By the time we hit the restaurant, I started feeling dehydrated and then it came on... the nausea. I barely got a chance to speak to my friend due to my frequent trips to the bathroom. Before we hit the car, I was nearly on the floor. I'll spare you the details but it wasn't pretty and I am STILL sick!

Since going back to work, I've been sick at least once a month. It sucks and I'm sure my bosses just looooove it. Well, this time, I'm about 2 weeks shy of my resignation date and I have sooooo much work to do but I'm completely side lined by this whole thing.

So, quickly, I'm going to list a few things I've been grateful for the last few days...
  • My dogs - because they stuck by my side the ENTIRE time I spewed chunks and cuddled with me endlessly.
  • My son - he's so patient and I think he just 'gets it' that Ima's not feeling so hot. He's going easy on me.
  • Our Gannenet (day care lady) - she took Yoavi yesterday when both of us were completely out of commission.
  • Grocery shopping online - it allowed me to buy stuff to make chicken soup ... because it's all I can eat.
  • Chicken soup and rice - because it's all I can eat.
For your enjoyment, here's Yoav not enjoying his food...

Now tell me what you're grateful for...

Guest Post: 5 Ways to Renew Your Denim Favorites for Summer

Today's post is written by a women I've known for A LONG TIME! I'm pretty sure we went to middle school together - that's how long I've known her! For my gratitude challenge, Day 5, I'm giving her the spotlight. She has an amazing post about DENIM! Since moving to Israel, my fashion sense is a little wonky, so I asked Courtney to come up with some ideas on how to dress yourself properly. I am SO grateful for her and this post - enjoy!

Hi all! It's such a pleasure to meet you! I'm Courtney, founder and owner of Closet Fashion Fix where I offer style tips and tricks to make the most of what you already have in your closet. You can also find me on Facebook where I offer personal style advice to all. A HUGE thank you to Hillary for finding and contacting me!! See you all soon! I'm sure the topic of this post is one that everyone can relate to.  We have all worn an awesome piece of denim at some point in our lives (especially in the 80's).  This summer there are tons of ways to break out those old favorites from your closet or invest in some new.  Here are 5 ways to renew your blues!

Denim Shirt
This is my favorite style to mix and match throughout a wardrobe. The chambray work shirt is an essential piece to any closet.  Layer over a casual tee and jeans or over a floral dress.  Tuck one in to a pencil skirt to make a work outfit laid back.  Show off a great pair of colored bottoms.  Denim can be worn for work or the weekend- that's the best part!

Denim Jacket
The denim jacket can come in different shapes and styles.  From blazer to biker, the possibilities are endless.  Pair your chambray blazer with bright separates to fight the office chill or put on a classic denim jacket with a girly dress to ground your look.

A classic jean jacket looks great over stripes or with bright denim bottoms.  It is also easy to throw on over a floaty dress.  Preppy chic with a button down is always a classic, too.

A denim blazer is another way to work in some casual flair to a dressed up look.

Lastly, colored and white jean toppers are a fresh take on an old standby.

Denim Vest
I never would have believed you if you told me denim vests would come back in style 10 years ago.  But sure enough, here they are!  I love the look of a sleeveless denim jacket over a simple tee or dress.  It's an easy way to add a topper without adding warmth on these balmy days.  (Plus, this is a great DIY project for a well loved denim jacket.  Just cut off the arms and you have a new style!)

Denim Shorts
Don't worry, these shorts are all grown up.  No frayed hems or pocket linings peeking out on these shorts.  The denim short can be worn with sandals or heels depending on how you style them.  With a silk top- strappy heels.  With a slouchy sweater- sandals.  Pairing denim on denim is fun with a pair of white shorts and a denim shirt.

(PS. a safe hem length for most is typically 5-7 inches)

Denim Skirt or Dress
No mini skirts here.  The new face of denim is polished and definitely appropriate for all ages.  A denim shirt dress looks great with platform sandals and minimal jewelry.  A denim pencil skirt works overtime with your casual weekend tees or during the week dressed up with pumps and a button down.

Gratitude Challenge - the Lost Days

First, Happy America Day (as some of my Israeli friends call it) - I hope you're having a fantastic 4th of July and I REALLY hope you're grateful to the men and women who risk their lives to protect your freedom every day. I know I am!

I kind of missed out on day 3 and almost day 4 of the Gratitude Challenge. Why? Well, I got tired and the lazy side of me took over. Still, I DO want to tell you what I'm grateful for. A little back story first...

Yesterday, Yoav had two doctor's visits that I deemed completely unnecessary. One was a follow up with his orthopedist to make sure his bowed feet straightened out (they did) and the second was a follow up to a follow up with his neurologist. Well, the first appointment (with the foot doctor) was almost missed. I decided to out-smart traffic and I accidentally turned into an area that took me straight to the highway. Yes, I felt like an idiot. Yes, I called my husband for help. He rescheduled the appointment for later that afternoon.

Peekaboo - I see you!!
The appointment with the neurologist was missed but only because I hit major traffic. It takes a half an hour (often less) to get from my house to his office - yet, yesterday it would have taken me 90 minutes. Craig called the office to ask if it was OK for me to be late and they told him 'no', so he canceled it!

Look what I can do!
So, why the back story? First, I felt like an idiot but in my idiocy, I actually got to spend more time with Yoav, which is something I've been CRAVING lately! Second, it gave me more down time - I was actually able to just chill for a bit. So, I am eternally grateful for yesterday!

And what about today... Well, every year, on the 4th of July, my office celebrates the holiday. My bosses are aware that most of us miss being home this time of year, so they always bring in lunch for us. The food wasn't so tasty but the sentiment was really appreciated.

Hi. Why won't you just let me sleep!

I'm grateful for a few other things, too...
  • We have great friends - we really do!
  • My friends at work because they just get me. It's a rare thing to find.
  • My son - but not in the cheesy way - he's taught me humility and patience.
  • Hot dogs! I'm really grateful for them because they're very versatile for me when cooking here.
  • My freedom...I'm really grateful to have citizenship to two countries in which I'm free. I don't take my freedom for granted - it's truly a gift!

Why do we keep going to the doctor??

So, tell me, this 4th of July, what are YOU grateful for! Keep those positive thoughts comin'!!

Gratitude Challenge - Blog Hop

OK, before I dive into the blog hop stuff, I promised you - my dear readers - that I would document everything I am grateful for. I promise, it won't be silly things like "I'm so grateful for coffee" even though, right now, I AM really grateful for coffee. I got up really early, thanks to Yoav (and Sparky dog), but that early time meant I cleaned the floors, brought in laundry from the line (that's right! We don't have a dryer), put some more laundry to go in the washing machine, AND I still had time to make my blessed coffee.

And on to some REAL gratitude...
  • I am grateful that last night, as my husband studied for his exam, I got some quiet time to do some work.
  • I am grateful for the foresight I had to cook a kilo of chicken in advance and freeze it - dinner was a breeze last night.
  • I am grateful to my brother-in-law for posting so many pictures of my niece and nephews - I miss them - and it reminds me that I'll get to see them in just over a month.
  • I'm grateful for my job because I work in a company where the higher-ups still ask for your advice on personal matters like vacation spots to go to and yummy food to eat when dieting (truth!!).
  •  I am grateful to Cecil dog who just wanted to cuddle with me last night.

My Next Blog Challenge

A few weeks ago, while sitting at work in the conference room lunch area, I asked my coworkers a question: what should my next challenge be? The answers stemmed around weight loss, food, crafts, and pictures. Needless to say, I was as bored by the recommendations as I was by my blog. I've  hit a rut with blogging and rather than say "adios" to my fantastic readers (including our family in Australia, South Africa, the US, France, Canada, England, and Germany - yeah, we have a global family), I wanted to give myself a challenge. I also want to inspire YOU!

Last night, we went to dinner with Craig's cousin, Leora. Being the sweetheart that she is, she brought me a Marie Claire magazine from Australia. I LOVE IT! It's waaaaay better than the Marie Claire in the US. Anyway, there was an article about a woman who reviewed the book The Magic (the sequel to The Secret) and the book is all about gratitude. Since I work with an amazing life coach and I get to talk to amazing life coaches nearly every day, the topic of gratitude isn't new to me. I guess The Magic (not to be confused with the movie "Magic Mike") talks about how if you are constantly grateful, good things will come to you. The author of the article didn't really believe in the power of gratitude and she failed the assignment (in my opinion). She failed to understand that being grateful is a powerful thing but not because you can GET anything from being grateful. Being grateful (and just the act of saying "Thank You") for something makes you feel good inside and it reminds you that you are LUCKY to have what you do because a lot of others go without it.

So, here's my challenge: blog at least once a day on what I'm grateful for.

No matter how tired I am, how pissed off I am, and how down-and-out I feel - I am going to record what I am grateful for. Each morning when I wake up and each night before I go to bed, I'm going to vocalize "I am so grateful for..."

Sound like a plan?

Now, this wouldn't be a challenge if I didn't challenge YOU, too. When you read what I'm grateful for, I want YOU to write down what YOU'RE grateful for and leave it as a comment. The more goodness we put out in the world, the better off we'll all be.

It allows me to write out my feelings and insert them into your head.

Because I woke up late and he let it slide!
So, tell me what YOU are grateful for!
